These pretty visuals are part of a project called Coral Cities by Craig Taylor of Ito World. They are essentially visualisations of how far it is possible to commute from the city centre in 30 minutes, presenting a very different perspective of the road networks in 40 global cities. One that brings to mind vibrant and blooming ocean corals.
The webs not only show the complexity of each road network, but also how it is affected by major geographical features such as rivers, seas and mountains. The colour palettes used are purely to enhance the images visually and add to the coral theme.
It's worth bearing in mind that these maps focus solely on distance and do not take congestion into account. It would be interesting to compare the shape and size if they were to consider typical commuter traffic and the subsequent travel times.
